Whenever the weather runs afoul, we receive all sorts of weather reports, notifications, and updates on our phones, tablets, watches, laptops, and desktops .  Never in my lifetime have I been so informed about the climatic conditions at any given moment in virtually any part of the world.  But…these notifications pop on only when the weather gets in the way of our daily lives and disrupts our routine. Makes sense.

The Problem: Weather Too Nasty

Scenic winter view of snow-covered trees and road in peaceful Estonian countryside.

We get the details of road closures, suggestions for alternate routes, expectations of delays, cancellations of events, school closures, and government agency closures.  As a result of these delays, cancellations, and closures, we are asked as employees in satellite locations to pitch in to work a little longer or a little faster to make up for our coworkers who are unable to work due to the weather conditions in their locale.

My wife works for a company with offices in cities across the U.S.  This morning, while working her day, she received an instant message advising employees that Nashville, Tennessee, is experiencing low temperatures and icy roads.  These conditions were sufficient enough to close the Nashville office.  Old Man Winter strikes!

The Solution: Weather Too Perfect

So, all of this calamity started me thinking.  What I would love to see some day is a notification pop onto my phone that says to me…

“It is way too perfect a day today to go into work.  William, take the day off and go enjoy yourself!”

Right?

How about that!  How great would that be?  When roads become too nasty and dangerous to drive, we become trapped in our homes with nothing to do except laundry or house cleaning, yuck!  A total waste of a day.

But a “Too Nice to Work Day” would be amazing, a total gift.  A day to do something you have wanted to do but never had the time.  Do something silly like play miniature golf. Release a little stress by going bowling or hit balls at a driving range.  Sit in the sun and read a book while having coffee at a cozy little off-beat coffee shop.  Eat ice cream. Go see a movie by yourself.  What you choose simply does not matter, just indulge in your whimsey.

I am a sixty-year-old wild eyed wanderer who has spent his entire life searching for that “one thing” as his life’s work only to realize that maybe there is no “one thing”. I have been a beer salesman, a high school math teacher, an insurance adjuster, a government service worker, and a grocery store clerk.

I have lived on both coasts and traveled frequently between the two and I am anxious to not only share my experiences with you, but to hear all about your experiences. Together we will make each other better!
