Massive Waves Hit San Clemente Pier on Christmas Eve 2024 – Our Memorable Experience!

A vacation in Dana Point is usually our sunny escape, filled with warm sand and gentle waves. We love it there and visit about four times a year, always staying at the Dana Point Marina Inn. Its location can’t be beaten. Though we stay in Dana Point we spend most of our days in San Clemente, shopping and dining along Avenida Del Mar.
But This Time…

Little did we know, “atmospheric river-fueled storms” had been battering Southern California, creating some of the largest waves we’d ever seen. Driving in from sunny Phoenix, we hadn’t seen a single hint of the chaos awaiting us along the coast. Tuesday morning was overcast but dry—a welcome change for us desert dwellers.
San Clemente has a fantastic walking path along the beach. It starts at North Beach and runs south to who knows where. We don’t go that far. On Christmas Eve, we parked overlooking the San Clemente Pier, paid our fair share, and set off on our walk.
As we descended the parking lot hill, the sheer size of the waves slowed our stroll. The roar of crashing waves echoed along the coast, injecting us with a charge of excitement.
Walking Among the Chaos
We followed the path south, walking alongside the railroad tracks and never taking our gaze off the powerful surf. At T-Street, we turned back toward the pier. That’s when I decided to capture the chaos on video—I couldn’t resist preserving such an awe-inspiring scene.
Don’t just take my word for it—watch the video below and experience the unrelenting power of the waves yourself!…
A Christmas to Remember
This Christmas Eve at the San Clemente Pier was unlike any other—a humbling reminder of nature’s unrelenting power and beauty. Moments like this remind us of our small place in the grand scheme of things, and we’re grateful to have witnessed it and to share it with you.
